Plan for a New Multipurpose Centre, Porta Genova (Milan), Italy​

Il progetto per un Nuovo centro polifunzionale a Porta Genova nasce da uno studio del luogo inteso quale luogo di transito ferroviario dismesso a cavallo tra due realtà diverse: un ponte in ferro collega due aree milanesi “diversamente vivaci” quali la zona dei Navigli (che accoglie energie derivate dalla movida, dai divertimenti) con la zona di via Tortona (che rappresenta il mondo dell’arte e della creatività, nota in particolari momenti dell’anno in quanto accoglie importanti manifestazioni).
Il progetto si pone quindi come ulteriore “nodo” di contatto tra realtà differenti con l’intenzione di creare un luogo in cui queste energie possano incontrarsi, mescolarsi e generare inedite forze propulsive per grandi eventi e nuove occasioni.
Planimetricamente l’edificio si posiziona in prossimità della stazione, con la quale non instaura un rapporto diretto, ma un legame fatto dell’opposizione tra pieni e vuoti, matericità differenti, passaggio tra città e natura. Il progetto si pone nel territorio come elemento di fusione tra il movimento intellettuale tipico di una città varia e caotica, con la natura che diventa parte integrante del progetto. Sfruttando la direzionalità derivata dalla lettura e dalla conformazione del sito ferroviario, il progetto si sviluppa secondo alcuni setti principali che scandiscono dei percorsi suggeriti ma non imposti, affinché il fruitore possa scoprire e percepire gli spazi che lo compongono tra i quali spazi espositivi al piano interrato e spazi per la cultura (biblioteca) e la creatività (laboratorio, atelier e temporary shops).
Volumetricamente il progetto si fonde gradualmente con le linee del parco e le movimentazioni del suolo, ponendosi dunque in netta contraddizione con il contesto. L’obiettivo del progetto diventa aprirsi alle sollecitazioni esterne, abbandonando una volta per tutte il mito dell’autonomia del pensiero architettonico, spostando l’interesse per l’ibridazione, le commistioni di linguaggi ed esperienze. Da qui l’importanza che viene attribuita agli eventi che si svolgono nello spazio, piuttosto che alle funzioni, poiché progettare gli eventi vuol dire intercettare lo shock che distingue la nostra società metropolitana da quelle che ci hanno preceduto. Uno spazio che sia il meno costrittivo possibile, che non limiti la libertà di movimento e che non escluda la possibilità di un utilizzo non programmato dello spazio.

The project for a new multi-purpose centre at Porta Genova comes from my study on the area as a transit railway place which is between two different situations: an iron bridge links two areas of Milan (lively in two different ways) the Navigli area (which receives energy from the nightlife and entertainment) with the Via Tortona area (which represents the world of art and creativity, certain times of the year when it hosts important events).
Thus the project arises as another hub between two different realities which is meant to create a place where these two energies can meet, mingle and generate new driving forces for big events and new opportunities. Planimetrically the building is located in the vicinity of the station with which it does not have a direct relationship but one that is made up of the contrast between full and empty, different substance, rural and urban landscape.  The project is in the area as a fusion element between an intellectual one which is typical of a various and chaotic town, with nature that becomes an integral part of the project.
Exploiting the directionality derived from reading material and information gained from the railway site, the project is developed according to some main walls which mark the routes suggested but not imposed. So the viewer can discover and be aware of the spaces which it is made up of, among which there are exhibition areas in the basement and cultural and creative areas (library, laboratories, workshops and temporary shops). 
Volumetrically the project gradually interwines with the park lines and ground movements placing itself in complete contradiction with the contest. The aim of the project stars to open up to outside stimuli abandoning once and for all the myth of autonomy of architectonic thought shifting interest in hybridization the mingling of language and experience. 
Hence the importance which is attributed to the events which take place in the area rather than the functions, because planning the events means intercepting the shock that distinguishes our metropolitan society from those that have preceded it. An area which is the least possibility constrictive, that does not limit freedom of movement and that does not exclude the possibility of non programme of use of space.
