Detached house project, Canzo (Como), Italy

Il progetto per una villa unifamiliare, da situarsi in uno lotto piuttosto triangolare nel Comune di Canzo (CO), nasce dal primo Laboratorio di Progettazione affrontato durante il percorso universitario: è un progetto quindi sperimentale, di approccio alla disciplina architettonica, che pone l’attenzione sui temi della composizione volumetrica dell’oggetto creato e del suo rapporto con il contesto esistente. Il lotto, dalla forma triangolare irregolare, è situato ad una quota inferiore rispetto alla quota di accesso: per questo motivo si è deciso di collocare l’edificio in zona nord - ovest in modo da potervi accedere direttamente dalla quota di ingresso tramite un ponte che conduce al piano primo, nonché zona giorno della villa.   
L’intervento, progettato tramite la disposizione su due piani delle diverse attività abitative (con box auto interrato), prevede l’insediamento nel lotto di un unico volume rettangolare, a tratti scavato per costruire “occasioni” di relazione tra i particolari ambiti “interni” della casa e il contesto circostante, creando inedite viste suggestive verso il centro storico di Canzo e il paesaggio limitrofo. Gli spazi abitativi sono divisi in due piani: il piano primo accoglie la zona giorno, con gli spazi riservati alla cucina, al soggiorno, al salotto, ad un bagno di servizio ed un locale studio che, all’occorrenza,  funge anche da stanza degli ospiti. Una grande scalinata, in parte utilizzata come libreria nella parte sottostante, conduce ad un atro spazio di relax posto al piano terra che mette in relazione le diverse stanze della zona notte con gli spazi di servizio della piscina e il giardino. Nella zona interrata infine sono collocati gli spazi di servizio quali lavanderia, cantina e box auto. Tutti gli spazi sono concepiti a misura d’uomo: ogni dettaglio architettonico è stato elaborato pensando alla vivibilità reale degli spazi domestici. Architettura e natura sono messe in relazione tramite grandi vetrate aperte verso la cittadina. Il ritmo delle aperture scandisce i prospetti, tutti diversificati a seconda delle relazioni che si vogliono instaurare con l’intorno, tenendo in considerazione anche l’esposizione solare, fondamentale per la disposizione della casa nel lotto.

The plan of a detached house to be built on a triangular lot in the town of Canzo (CO) began in the first Architectural Design Laboratory while I was attending the university course: therefore a sperimental plan, concerning the architectural discipline focusing on themes of volumetric composition of a created object and its relationship with the existing framework.
The plot of land, which is roughly triangular, is positioned on a lower level than the entrance itself. That is why it was decided that the construction should be in a north-west area in order to gain direct access to the entrance by means of a bridge leading, to the first floor as well as the day area of the “villa”.
The project, planned with the position of two different living quarters (with a basement garage), plans placing the lot in one rectangular block which is shaped to satisfy choices regarding particular connections between indoor spaces and surroundings creating new suggestive views over the historic centre of Canzo and neighbouring landscape.  The living quarters are on three levels. The first floor houses the day area with spaces reserved for the kitchen, the living room, a bathroom and a study, that could become a spare room for guests when needed. A wide wooden staircase, also used as a bookcase in the lower part, leads to a relaxation area on the ground floor which connects the different rooms in the sleeping area with the facility spaces of pool and garden. Finally, in the basement area, there can be found the spaces dedicated to the wash room, the cellar and garage.
All the spaces are calculated for comfort. Every architectonical detail has been worked out thinking of the needs of living conditions within domestic walls. Architecture and nature combine by means of large glass windows which open onto the town. The size of the windows determines the prospects, all different according to what sort of relationship is desired whit the surroundings, also taking into consideration exposure to the sun’s rays, which is essential for the layout of the house on the lot.
