Reform Milan, Saint Christopher Area (Milan), Italy

Il progetto che riguarda l’area di San Cristoforo a Milano fa parte di una serie di progetti ideati per una riqualificazione puntuale di alcune aree milanesi. In particolare l’area posta a Sud-Ovest di Milano, in prosecuzione dell’area di Porta Genova, presenta un’ampia piazza e una stazione ferroviaria in parte ancora utilizzata. 
Da un’analisi condotta degli elementi che caratterizzano l’intera area sono emerse alcune riflessioni che hanno portato allo sviluppo del Museo di Arte Contemporanea previsto.
«“Uno scalo”: luogo di passaggio, di movimento, identificativo di uno specifico territorio, una scala, una misura... La velocità, idea di cambiamento, mutamento del territorio che ci circonda... la periferia, la desolazione e l’abbandono... “Contemporaneo”: la contemporaneità, la volontà di vivere e abitare gli spazi; lo spazio come vuoto che crea la relazione tra gli elementi di un luogo... “Progettare lo spazio”: è modifica e trasformazione del presente...».
Lo scalo, la contemporaneità, il progetto, sono gli ingredienti fondamentali della presa di possesso di un territorio che necessità una trasformazione. I due elementi identificativi dello scalo (la stazione e il vecchio edificio adibito a deposito merci), caratterizzanti l’area in analisi, entrano in forte rapporto con il progetto e si modificano. Non modificano la loro forma, in quanto essa è testimonianza di un passato, ma trasformano il loro uso per poter essere condivisi dalla contemporaneità. Il progetto si fonda, si radica, è fondamentale la sua presenza nella trasformazione... il territorio muta, viene scavato... si creano nuove relazioni. La direzionalità suggerita dai binari e la sua direzionalità perpendicolare generano la forma planimetrica del progetto e dei percorsi che mettono in relazione il parco e il Museo.
Gli elementi preesistenti rappresentano il tempo passato, ma anche i luoghi dell’azione, dell’attesa, del viaggio e del movimento... viaggio “fisico” che viene reinterpretato come viaggio “della memoria”, “della conoscenza”... il cambio di destinazione sottolinea il passaggio da atto fisico ad atto mentale... Le preesistenze diventano luogo della conoscenza... il sapere e l’arte...  L’Architettura assume così un significato sociale. Ricordare trasformando ciò che è stato, apportando nuove conoscenze. L’Architettura è progetto e modifica del nostro presente nel rispetto di ciò che è stato.

The project for the Saint Christopher area in Milan is part of a series of projects designed to timely re-qualify some Milan areas. In particular the post area south-west of Milan, in prosecution of the area of Porta Genova, presents a wide square and a railway station which is still partly used.
From a survey of elements which characterize the whole area there were some issues which led to the development of the foreseen Museum of Contemporary Art.
«“A goods yard” in disuse: along the busy passage, marked as a specific territory, a scale, a measurement... The speed, the idea of change, the alteration of surrounding territory... The outskirts, the desolations, and the abandonment... 
“Contemporary”: the contemporaneity, the will to live and occupy the areas, the space as place which creates the relationship between the local places...
“Project the area”: is to alter and transform the present...».
The goods yard in disuse, the contemporaneity and the project are the fundamental ingredients in order to gain control of the territory that needs transforming. The two identifying elements of the goods yard (the station and the old building used as a goods depot) as they are elements of past history, that transform their use in order to be shared by the contemporary world.
The project enlarges and takes root, its presence is fundamental to the transformation... the silent territory is escavated new relationships are formed. The directions are suggested by the railway tracks and its perpendicular direction generates the planimetric form of the project and the routes which link the park with the Museum.
The pre-existing elements represent the past but also places of action, of waiting, of journey, of movement... a physical journey which is interpreted as a reminiscent journey of awareness... the change of direction underlines the passage between the physical and mental act. Pre-existance becomes a place of knowledge, knowledge and art.
Architecture therefore takes on a social meaning... Remembering by transforming what was, gaining new knowledge. Architecture is a project and alteration of our present compared to what it was.
